The forum at the Friends’ School was announced a week earlier, after rumors of an impending peace deal proliferated.

I pondered the phrases again: Flexibility and Practicality, and Facts on the Ground. As if he was telling us, “Forget about returning to our Destroyed Villages along the Coast; the best we could hope for was a state in the West Bank and Gaza.” His attitude bothered me. Perhaps he was right. Perhaps our aspirations for justice were unrealistic in a world where Justice wore a straitjacket instead of a blindfold. Still, starting negotiations with such a concession was a capitulation. After all, Israeli stolenments in the West Bank (the so-called “settlements”) were also “facts on the ground” that make it “impractical” to recover those lands either. By the same token, we should acknowledge their domain over Jerusalem. Besides, if we accepted today’s stolenments, then why not accept the ones to be built tomorrow, or next year, or next decade?

I badly wanted to say something, but the line for asking questions was too long. At least, the packed room boded a hopeful aura of a people wanting to participate in shaping their future.

The whole debate was moot. As we spoke, far away in Norway, the real deal was being conceived, giving birth to what became known as the “Oslo Accords” between Israel and the PLO, or simply “Oslo”. While the world was spellbound at the “historic handshake” between Arafat and Rabin on the White House lawn, Palestinians everywhere were searching for copies of the agreement to find out what was in store for us.
